Fruit Loopz: A Celebration of Queer & Trans
Youth and the Arts!
Fruit Loopz Pride Youth Stage is a
festival for youth by youth at Pride - and sometimes at other places
too! A carnival of Arts, Words and Ideas created and energized by
the wild spirit of Toronto's LGBTTQ youth. SOY (Supporting Our
Youth) proudly presents and celebrates the performance and art of
some of Toronto's most talented young musicians, comics, filmmakers,
dancers, DJ's, singers and spoken word artists, all under 25 years
of age.
Fruit Loopz was initiated by Supporting Our Youth (SOY) in the
summer of 1998 as an artistic, social and community space for
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth - especially those
under 19 years of age. It is an all-ages, alcohol free event where
young people can perform, volunteer, meet other youth, be creative,
show their art, and learn about community.

Fruit Loopz not only creates a space to celebrate queer youth
arts but also provides a forum for young people to learn about
community arts production and receive mentoring from older artists
and technicians. Our stage managers, sound and cabaret technicians
are all adults who are paired with youth assistants during the
event. As well, many young people who have performed for the first
time at Fruit Loopz go on to become well respected working artists
under the mentorship of SOY and our network of associated
professional artists. First-time Fruit Loopz performers have gone on
to work at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, perform at Fem Cab, work at
Pride Vision, write and perform at the Rhubarb Festival, perform at
Strange Sisters and Where the Boys Are, and intern at The Tarragon
Theatre. Each year, some 20 volunteer members work on the Fruit
Loopz Committee.
The Fruit Loopz Crew won the Lesbian Gay Bi YouthLine Award for
Best Youth Event of 1998!
