Looking for work is never easy. When faced with the challenges
of ageism, racism, homophobia and transphobia, the task can become
overwhelming. At SOY, we have relationships with various community
partners whose role it is to assist young people in finding meaningful
employment.
Here are some of the employment initiatives that SOY is involved
with:
SOY EMPLOYMENT CLINICS
Sponsored by Youth Employment Toronto, SOY holds monthly clinics
at our office. Here, you can meet privately with Youth Employment
Toronto worker Grant Foley to discuss your employment goals, interests
and possible training opportunities. Grant will help to guide you
in the right direction to suit your employment and/or training needs.
To sign up for the next SOY Employment Clinic, call Clare at (416)
324-5077 or email soy@sherbourne.on.ca.
OUT
TO WORK
In May of 2002 the SOY Youth Employment Services Enhancement Committee,
in partnership with T.E.A.C.H.,
and with the support of the Lesbian
& Gay Community Appeal and the Canadian
Auto Workers Union, created and printed an employment brochure/handbook
for lgbt youth and employers entitled "Out To Work: Lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender and transsexual youth and work".
Thanks to the generosity of the Canadian Auto Workers and the Canadian
Union of Public Employees, we have been able to re-print the
Out To Work booklet. For your copy or copies of Out To Work, please
contact SOY at (416) 324-5077 or email soy@sherbourne.on.ca.
JOB POSTINGS
We regularly receive postings for employment positions in the LGBTT
community, community and social services field, as well as various
other positions, both full and part time. We post these on our listserve,
known as SOYGROUP. If you are not yet a member of SOYGROUP and would
like to sign up (messages also include community announcements,
notices about apartments for rent, roommates wanted, opinions, rants,
raves, etc!), please contact soy@soytoronto.org.
We look forward to hearing from you!
