SHIFT: SOY's photography project, in partnership with Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography. Facilitated by Chris Ironside (Session 1) and Elise Windsor (Session 2), this is a project for queer and trans youth, under age 29, who are interested in learning about photography, camera operation, darkroom printing, and creative expression. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 21-June 27, 6-9pm (different locations - see below).

SHIFT Spring Program 2013 – SOY

The SHIFT Spring Program will consist of two sessioins of six (6) three hour workshops, which will run on a bi-weekly basis from May 21 – June 27, 2013.  The focus of these workshops will be on technical skills related to shooting outdoors, development of artistic pursuits and darkroom techniques.

 All workshops, unless otherwise noted, will be held at Gallery 44 Productions Facilities – located at 401 Richmond St. W., Suite #B120 (BASEMENT SUITE). We will meet on the scheduled dates and times listed below.  Please note: the first workshop of each of the two sessions will take place at Sherbourne Health Centre, 333 Sherbourne St. just south of Carlton.  Meeting room numbers are listed on the weekly schedule for the corresponding day.

Session One - Facilitated by Chris Ironside

Workshop 1: Tuesday May 21Getting Started. **(Sherbourne Health Centre, 4th floor, 333 Sherbourne St. Just south of Carlton – Room #4003: Boardroom)

Review of camera basics related to shutter, aperture, exposure, camera and shooting outdoors with natural light. Brainstorm possible themes or ideas to work with and explore as well places we would like to visit for shooting. Artist screening TBD. Next workshop – think about and bring objects, imagery, etc you would like to use to construct your photograms.

Workshop 2: Thursday May 23Darkroom. (Gallery 44, 401 Richmond St, #B120)

Darkroom orientation.  Photograms with Elise.

Workshop 3: Tuesday May 28Outdoor Shoot. (Gallery 44, 401 Richmond St, #B120)

Meet first at Gallery 44 to collect cameras and film.

Workshop 4: Thursday May 30Darkroom. (Gallery 44, 401 Richmond St, #120)

Working with negatives – contact sheets and enlargements.  Next workshop – think about what you photographed during the first outdoor shoot – what would you change?  What would you do differently?  Consider the use of props or costumes and stage and image outdoors.

Workshop 5: Tuesday June 4Outdoor Shoot. (Gallery 44, 401 Richmond St, #B120)

Meet first at Gallery 44 to collect cameras and film.

Workshop 6: Thursday June 6Wrapping Up. (Gallery 44, 401 Richmond St, #B120)

First half of workshop – finish up printing.  Second half of workshop – group presentation of work and choosing a print for exhibition – food and beverages.

*Note: Material fees such as film, paper, processing and chemistry are included.  Cameras will be provided for those workshops where shooting is required

Session Two - Facilitated by Elise Windsor

Facilitator bio: 
Chris Ironside was born in London, Ontario where he grew up dreaming of acting on daytime television, becoming a celebrity and winning an Emmy. He became an artist instead and moved to Toronto. Working primarily in photography and drawing he is interested in representations of masculine ideals and identity through performance, documentation and the staged image. His latest body of photographic work, Mr. Long Weekend, was exhibited during CONTACT 2010 while his collaborative work with Suzy Lake, Family Values, was part of CONTACT’s public installation program What’s The Hype? Chris is a recipient of an OAAG Award for Education. He currently teaches photography in the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM) at the University of Guelph. www.chrisironside.com

Elise Victoria Louise Windsor is a visual artist working and living in Toronto, Ontario. She graduated from OCAD University’s BFA program, focusing in photography, printmaking and sculpture. Layering photography with sculpture, she creates analogue-based photographic illusions addressing the phantasmagoric qualities specific to the medium of photography. Elise recently participated in an XPACE/SPARK Contemporary Art Space Residency in Syracuse, New York and The State Hermitage Museum Foundation of Canada Young Artist Program, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Elise will be returning to school in the fall at Concordia University. www.elisewindsor.com
